Chela by Yoly Petra @yolypetra
“I am an artist, educator, naturalist and mother. I have lived in the Sacraments area on and off for over 25 years. I have also lived in Santa Cruz, Philadelphia and Guanajuato, Mexico. My work ranges from pen and ink illustration, watercolors, and charcoal drawings, to set design, mixed media, and sculpture. People describe my style as authentic, color-rich, dreamy, and folkloric. My focus is on artwork that is accessible, both in its physical form and in its content. I believe that art is for the people. I like murals and printmaking because these mediums have a wide reaching audience. I favor images that I hope will feel personal and relatable to a diverse audience, while allowing them to see the subject in a new light. I also aim to engage viewers in the craft of the work, and hope they get lost in the colors, shapes, and strokes that make up the larger image. I love finding the balance in between the freedoms and restrictions that each particular medium, image and concept present. For example, I love the combination of a controlled brush stroke with the unpredictability of intentional paint drips. Sometimes my message is subtle, other times it is direct and didactic. I enjoy the ambiguous quality that art encompasses, and embrace that each viewer may have their own unique interpretation of my work.”
